Treat the inside of the tooth

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment may help preserve a tooth when the pulp inside becomes inflamed, infected or irreversibly damaged.

How we approach it

Start with the diagnosis, then choose the treatment.

During root canal treatment, the internal canal system is cleaned, disinfected and sealed. The tooth usually also needs an appropriate final restoration to protect it from future fracture and leakage.

Care may include

  • Assessment of tooth pain and pulpal symptoms
  • Diagnostic testing and dental imaging
  • Root canal treatment for appropriate teeth
  • Temporary and final restorative planning
  • Follow-up assessment when indicated
  • Referral for complex endodontic cases when appropriate
What to expect

A simple, step-by-step process.

01

Confirm the source

Testing helps determine whether symptoms are coming from the tooth pulp, surrounding tissues or another source.

02

Treat the canal system

The internal spaces are cleaned and sealed under local anesthesia when root canal treatment is indicated.

03

Protect the tooth

The final restoration is planned based on the amount of remaining structure and the forces on the tooth.

Questions about root canals

Common questions.

These answers are general. Your dentist can give you advice that is specific to your situation after an assessment.

Does a root canal remove the tooth?

No. Root canal treatment is intended to retain the natural tooth by treating the diseased or damaged tissue inside it.

Will I need a crown afterward?

Many back teeth and heavily weakened teeth benefit from cuspal coverage after root canal treatment, but the final restoration depends on the individual tooth.

Can every tooth have a root canal?

No. Severe fractures, insufficient remaining tooth structure, periodontal problems or other factors can make extraction or another plan more appropriate.
