Jaw comfort & tooth protection

TMJ, Jaw Pain & Night Guards

Jaw pain, clenching, grinding and tooth wear can have several causes. Assessment helps determine whether a dental appliance or another approach may be useful.

How we approach it

Start with the diagnosis, then choose the treatment.

TMJ and facial-pain concerns can involve muscles, joints, teeth, bite, habits and non-dental conditions. Treatment is based on the most likely diagnosis rather than a one-size-fits-all appliance.

Care may include

  • Assessment of jaw discomfort and movement
  • Evaluation of clenching, grinding and tooth wear
  • Custom night guards when appropriate
  • Discussion of habits and self-care strategies
  • Monitoring of cracked or heavily worn teeth
  • Referral for complex pain or joint conditions when appropriate
What to expect

A simple, step-by-step process.

01

Describe the pattern

We ask when symptoms occur, what makes them better or worse, and whether headaches, locking, clicking or tooth wear are present.

02

Assess teeth, muscles and jaw

The examination helps identify whether the concern appears primarily dental, muscular, joint-related or requires further assessment.

03

Choose a conservative plan

Depending on the diagnosis, options may include monitoring, habit changes, a night guard or referral for additional care.

Questions about tmj & night guards

Common questions.

These answers are general. Your dentist can give you advice that is specific to your situation after an assessment.

Does clicking mean I have TMJ disorder?

Not necessarily. Jaw sounds are common and do not always require treatment. Pain, locking, limited opening and functional problems are more important reasons to seek assessment.

Will a night guard stop me from grinding?

A night guard may protect teeth and change how forces are distributed, but it does not necessarily eliminate the underlying grinding or clenching behaviour.

Can jaw pain come from something other than the jaw joint?

Yes. Muscles, teeth, sinuses, headaches and other medical conditions can produce overlapping symptoms, which is why diagnosis matters.
